FAQ

Questions will be added to this as they come in, so if you have one feel free to comment to this post and it will be added.

Q: What's the character limit for each player?
A: Four characters are allowed per player.

Q: If you already play a character who captains a ship, is it okay to play a number of other Captains?
A: Two of your characters may be Captains. Bear in mind though that this means you would have two ships to update for each week. If you can't handle it, don't do it.

Q: What classes of characters are going to appear in the RP? Can the players be whatever they want to be so long as they can logically exist within the RP canon?
A: The only classes we have set in stone are pirates, privateers, smugglers, merchants, mercenaries, and Imperials. So long as your desired class (if not one of those listed) is reasonable and can fit into the game without having to break logic or the fourth wall, it's fine. If not, a mod will let you know.

Q: If you play a number of characters, do they have to belong to different crews?
A: Nope. Put them where you like.

Q: How many kinds of magic could a character use? And what about other special abilities, like empathy, telekinesis, etc.? Are they allowed along with magic for one character?
A: These are all acceptable types of magic. Please see the rules for further details.

Q: So how does this work?
A: Separate journals from your personal one are created for your character (s) to post in and interact with other characters through LiveJournal - its like their own personal LiveJournal. You must update in character at least once every two weeks. The way this community works is: You apply and once you have been accepted you create a character journal. You head over to the friends add page and follow the instructions to add everybody. Next, go join the communities so that you can post to them if necessary (like if you're doing a log, or need to post out of character in the OOC community).

Q: Where can I find a list of the planets used in Discordia?
A: As with most information you could need, you can find it in [info]discordia_refs. It's located here.

Q: Well, that's nice, but I don't see my world listed. What should I do?
A: You have two options when it comes to adding a world. You can either follow the instructions at the end of the planet listing to get it added, or you can pick another world.

Q: How do you roleplay in an LJ group?
A: There are a few ways. One of them is to post in your character's journal with... whatever, really. For us, this has to be done at least once within every two week period, or else. Another way to RP is by commenting in character in other characters' journals. That sort of ends up being like you're having a conversation with them via LJ. ^^; The final way is to do a log. One person starts and each person adds a 'tag' (which is just like a reply) to it. I'll have an example of that up on Friday.

Q: What on earth is "Rizumikaru Yomi?"
A: That is our affiliated community. Both of the mods have 5+ characters over there. They don't have anything to do with our plot, but a lot of our members have followed us from there. In linking to each other, it's sort of like shared advertising. Check them out if you like. Maddie/Rufus is a mod there as well, and it the current game has been active for eight months running.

Q: How will magic work at Discordia?
A: Since every culture would have their own way of teaching magic, everybody would have their own way of doing it, like every fandom would. That way each fandom can keep their own particular way of doing magic. For instance, Fate (Star Ocean 3) would use symbology instead of the "Fire, Fira, Firaga" found in some Kingdom Hearts and some Final Fantasy, whereas Rufus would use materia to cast something like "Fire 1, Fire 2, Fire 3."

Q: Along those lines, how will Final Fantasy VII's materia system work?
A: It will work the same way as it does in the original game. Sorry Dirge. Nobody loves you. The list of materia that can be used, and their effects, are:

Materia Effect Spell When Usable
Restore Restores a small amount of HP (health) to a person. Heals wounds, at least to a small degrees, and gives the castee a feeling of being a little refreshed, a little more energetic. Each new level of curing restores a little more health. Cure 1, Cure 2, Cure 3 or Cure, Cura, Curaga After/during a fight to heal wounds. THIS MATERIA IS NOT MEANT FOR CURING ILLNESSES.
Revive Awakens an ally that has been K.O.d and restores a bit of health to them. Life Only when somebody has been knocked out and you wish to revive them. THIS MATERIA DOES NOT BRING BACK THE DEAD.
Lightning Shoots a bolt of lightning at a target, which each increasing spell level getting more and more powerful/shocking. Bolt 1, Bolt 2, Bolt 3 or Thunder, Thundara, Thundaga. Anytime you wish, but it may not hit another character without that player's permission.
Fire Shoots fire at a target, which each increasing spell level making the flame hotter/bigger. Fire 1, Fire 2, Fire 3 or Fire, Fira, Firaga Anytime you wish, but it may not hit another character without that player's permission.
Ice Freezes your target with an ice spell, causing extreme cold and sometimes ice crystals to form. Encases the castee in ice for a moment before shattering. Ice 1, Ice 2, Ice 3 or Blizzard, Blizzara, Blizzaga. Anytime you wish, but it may not hit another character without that player's permission.
Earth Causes earth-elemental damage--like a quake forming right under a target's feet. Quake 1, Quake 2, Quake 3 Only on a planet or mood that is actually made from rock This will not work on anything man-made. Also, it may not hit another character without that player's permission.
Seal Has two spell levels--one to cause an opponent to fall asleep, one keep the other from speaking/casting magic against you. Sleepel (the sleeping spell), Silence (I shouldn't have to explain that) Anytime you wish, but it may not hit another character without that player's permission.
Barrier Has four different levels of defensive magic.. Barrier: All physical damage to target(s) is halved for a limited time
MBarrier: All magical damage to target(s) is halved for a limited time
Reflect: The next four spells cast on the target(s) will be reflected back at the caster (some spells cannot be reflected).
Wall: Casts Barrier and MBarrier at the same time.
In battle only, or to protect yourself from something about to fall on you or blow you up.

For the time being, we are only allowing command materia (the green ones). Please do not start your character off with entirely mastered materia. Having one or two is fine, but try to master them at a reasonable pace. Remember--like in the game--you cannot level them up unless your character has them equipped during battle. Nobody gains AP by wandering around.

Q: What about magical items such as potions, elixirs, eye drops, echo screens, etc?
A: Your character could easily by these at any market, and they will work on anybody, even magic-less characters. We ask that your character carry no more than ten items of this sort at a time though.

Q: What time are we going by?
A: The calender year of Earth. Our June 21st will be the same as theirs.

Q: Does revive magic exist outside of materia use?
A: So long as you aren't raising the dead and revive somebody doesn't instantly return them to perfect health, have at it.

Q: What other magic can I use?
A: Nothing that will cause instant death or do something outrageous like a summon. You may not injure another person's character without their permission. If you have questions about anything else involving magic, track down Maddie/Rufus and ask her.

Q: What happens if my character dies?
A: Then your character is dead, obviously. Completely, totally, and permanently dead. Therefore, if you choose to leave, it is recommended that you don't kill off your character. That way somebody else can pick him/her up if they want to.

Q: What is "K.O.?"
A: "K.O." does not stand for "killed off." It mean "knocked out." In RPGs like Final Fantasy, this happens when your HP reaches O. Characters that are K.O. are able to be revived with things like revive magic/materia, a phoenix down, or just letting them sleep it off.

And my second question, in regards to magic; is Alchemy allowed, or should I find another way for Ed to use magic? Either way is fine with me. :)

It should be fine, provided he's not, like, all-powerful or something with it. There'll have to be limitations and such.
